A friend of mine recently asked me what makes a good IT Engineer. I simply told him that the most important thing is to be good at problem solving. You need to be good at identifying a problem, finding the cause of the problems and then putting it right. More importantly you need to remember what you have done so you can fix the same problem again in the future, knowledge is power they say and that certainly is the case in this industry!!!
There are a lot of things that make a good IT Engineer and not just a good memory! Firstly, stating the obvious you need to have a good level of intelligence, this job is not for someone that just wants a plodding 9-5 job that doesn’t take much thought, you have to be committed and you have to be prepared to put a shift in. Secondly, don’t expect to start your career on a fantastic wage. Yes the money can be good in the long term when you work your way up but you will have to start at junior level on a junior wage. Too many people finish school and college thinking that they will walk into a job with a starting wage of 20k+, it simply doesn’t work like that, especially when you are working in rural areas.
The third thing is patience. You will need a lot of this as you will come across many issues that will take time to resolve via process of elimination. Not everything you try to fix can be done in a couple of clicks and sometimes you may even have to pass the issue down the line to second or third line support.
Lastly, you need to be a good people person, especially if you are an onsite engineer operating in a face to face environment. Be polite, patent and expect to cop some flack in the front line. If you are looking to get into IT then I would suggest starting your career off with an Outsourced IT Support company. It’s a great place to start learning your trade.
